Parts of Anna Maria Island will get some of its trademark white sand replenished in the next few months.
First up is the beach at the south end of the island in Bradenton Beach. Coquina Beach is a county-owned public beach that has experienced a lot of erosion recently. Since the lifeguards can't get their four-wheelers quickly to the scene of an emergency, that beach gets the first batch of dredged sand.
Later, the northern end of the island in the City of Anna Maria will get some sand from a negotiated settlement with a pipeline company. There's more scheduled for 2014. We'll see how funding holds up for that.
In this part of Florida, the normal, along-shore (littoral) current flows from north to south, eroding beaches on the northern end and depositing sand at the southern. To see this in effect, take a look next time you cross the Longboat Pass bridge and see how the channel markers curve to the south out in the Gulf.
