For those wondering about the effects of the big Gulf oil-rig blow-out, on Anna Maria Island, we have seen no effects so far.
Even with this week's strong winds and waves (mostly from the south), we're not finding any direct impacts from the Deepwater Horizon's explosion, sinking or spill.
Some experts are even saying that the West Coast of Florida is at the same odds of having oil wash ashore as Cape Hatteras, North Carolina! Unless winds from the west were to push the huge oil slick our way (prevailing winds are generally from the east this time of year), the biggest danger would be from submerged oil being carried in our direction by the Loop Current.
The Loop Current flows clockwise from around the mouth of the Mississippi River along the eastern side of the Gulf of Mexico, then turns east through the Florida Straits and merges with the Gulf Stream to run northward along the Atlantic coast. Although none of us wishes any place to have ill effects from this tragic event, we're hoping the oil does not end up on our white sandy shores.
